History Of Tolar
Hood County, established in 1866, named Granbury as its county seat after three elections. The area, including Tolar, was settled before the county's formation, especially in the Paluxy Valley where fertile land and the Paluxy River attracted early settlers as far back as the 1840s.
Post-Civil War, settlers moved to Antioch and other areas seeking farming land, with settlements like Amulet predating Tolar. In 1881, John R. Powell opened the first store in Tolar, laying the groundwork for the town's development. Colonel W.L. McGaughey, an influential figure, donated land for the local school.
The arrival of the Fort Worth and Rio Grand Railroad in 1889 boosted Tolar's growth, facilitating trade and providing jobs. The town was named after Captain Alfred H.H. Tolar, a Civil War hero (although he may never have visited!). After 1900, notable events included the 1909 fire that destroyed most buildings, the town's incorporation in 1910, and receiving electricity in the 1920s. The town reorganized in the 1970s for a new water and sewer system, promoting new housing.
Tolar, TX is around 46 miles southwest of Fort Worth, TX, and lives at the intersection between FM 56 and US 377. It’s a classic booming, small town with around 1,200 residents, serving 600 students across three campuses.
