History Of Hico
Hico is a small city in central Texas, located in Hamilton County, with a population of 1,335 as of the 2020 census, a slight decrease from 1,341 in 2010. Initially established on Honey Creek and named after its founder's hometown in Kentucky, Hico moved 2.5 miles to align with the Texas Central line of the Katy Railroad and was incorporated in 1883, becoming a key shipping center for Hamilton County.
Historically, it developed as a cattle and cotton market, but today, ranching and tourism are central to its economy.
In 1903, Hico hosted the first Texas revival meeting of Kentucky evangelist Mordecai Ham. The city lies in the northern part of Hamilton County, with a small section extending into Erath County. U.S. Route 281 runs through Hico, connecting it to Stephenville to the northwest and Hamilton to the south. Texas State Highway 6 also crosses the city, leading to Meridian to the east and Dublin to the west-northwest. Hico covers an area of 1.8 square miles, entirely land.
Approximately 1.8 miles north of the city are the suspected remains of an impact crater formed after the Cretaceous Period. Hico is at the intersection of US 67 and US 281, about 80 miles southwest of Fort Worth.
