The story of Stephenville begins at the Alamo, well-known by all Texans for its role in sparking Texas’ independence from Mexico. After the battle, the Republic of Texas honored the families of those who perished by granting them land. Among these heroes was John Blair, a close friend of Jim Bowie, who fought valiantly at the Alamo. His sacrifice was recognized by giving land to his family, who later sold it to John M. Stephen.
In May 1855, George B. Erath, a surveyor, led John into the area now known as Erath County, and the settlement of Stephenville became the first major white settlement in the area.
As the settlement took shape, Stephen made a pivotal commitment to his fellow settlers: he would donate land for essential public structures, including a courthouse and churches. In return for this generosity, Stephenville would be designated the county seat of Erath County. The State of Texas officially recognized this arrangement in 1856, solidifying Stephenville's role as a center of civic life and marking the beginning of its journey as a thriving town in Texas history.
Stephenville, TX is around 70 miles southwest of Fort Worth, TX, and home to the well-respected Tarleton State University, a founding member of the Texas A&M University System.
