History Of Granbury
The city originated as a square with a log cabin courthouse and has evolved to include numerous historic landmarks, notably the Granbury Opera House, which continues to host "Broadway" productions.
The city was named after Confederate General Hiram B. Granberry. Scholars believe the current spelling, "Granbury," resulted from a misreading of his name, though recent evidence indicates Granberry himself preferred this spelling. Over time, the city grew and The Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway reached the city in 1887, later coming under the ownership of various railway companies before being acquired by the Fort Worth and Western Railroad in 1999.
Granbury's growth accelerated in 1969 with the construction of a dam on the Brazos River, forming Lake Granbury. Lake Granbury is a popular Hood County attraction with tons of open room for pulling tubes and a wonderful fishing hole!
Granbury is situated along US Route 377, about 30 miles southwest of Fort Worth. The city spans 13.99 square miles, with 0.61 square miles of water from Lake Granbury on the eastern side.
