                History Of Glen Rose

Glen Rose, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 67 and State Highway 144 in central Somervell County, Texas, was first settled in 1849 by Charles Barnard, who opened a trading post near Comanche Peak. Following the establishment of a federal Indian Reservation in 1855, Barnard moved to Fort Belknap but returned around 1859 when the reservation was abolished, setting up the first store on the present-day site of Glen Rose.

The town developed around a stone gristmill built along the Paluxy River and became known as Barnard's Mill. In 1871, Tyler Calhoun Jordan purchased the mill and, according to tradition, his wife renamed the town Rose Glen, which later became "Glen Rose" after a community vote. A post office opened in 1874, and Glen Rose was designated as the county seat when Somervell County was formed in 1875.

Educational institutions such as a Baptist college (established in 1879) and Glen Rose Collegiate Institute (founded in 1889) contributed to the town's early growth. A courthouse built in 1892 was destroyed by fire a year later, but a new Romanesque Revival style courthouse was constructed with local limestone and damaged in a 1902 tornado.

From the 1900s to the 1920s, Glen Rose had about 1,000 residents and was known for its mineral springs, attracting doctors and healers. The Great Depression brought economic challenges, but projects funded by the New Deal, including a new water and sewage system, low-water dams, school buildings, and a canning plant, supported the community.

Between 1940 and 1950, Somervell County's population declined, but Glen Rose's population grew. The construction of the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in the 1970s brought economic benefits and an influx of new residents, leading to a 34% population increase from 1970 to 1980. Farming, ranching, and tourism also became significant contributors to the local economy.

Glen Rose covers a total area of 2.7 square miles, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and is located 52 miles southwest of Fort Worth.
